The track on Mount Maurice Summit, Tasmania
The trail winds through forests, along streams, and over rocky outcroppings, offering a constantly changing and visually stunning experience. The first section of the trail is relatively easy, but as hikers progress deeper, they will encounter steeper and more challenging sections. I consider I consider the whole track is fairly easy with a nice and gradual elevation, but you can tell it is not a popular hike because some areas of the track are pretty overgrown.
The track is well-marked with pink tape, white and red signs, but it is still easy to loose a bit of orientation as the path is not always super clear, but if pay attention enough to the signs it will be a smooth walk to the top.
Once you arrive at the summit plateau, you will spot the trig point and reach the summit.
In my opinion, one of the highlights of the Mount Maurice hike is the stunning forest that surrounds the trail. The forest is filled with a variety of unique and exotic plant species, including towering eucalyptus trees and lush ferns.
Getting to
That’s the tricky bit, I definitely recommend going with a 4WD. And be prepared to scratch your car as the road to get there is very overgrown…You’ll also have to pass a bridge…a dodgy bridge…I took my chances with Tracy the Triton..but then regretted it on my way back, it was very silly of me…so evaluate the situation!
If you leave the car at the bridge you’ll add around 10km, if you have a bike that might be the solution. If you are happy crossing the bridge with your car then keep going till you will see a sign on the right hand side at the end of Knights Road.

Recommendations
The walking track is well marked a bit overgrown and full of leeches when I was there..so definitely wear long pants and gaiters.
Recommended to do it on a clear day as you won’t be disappointed. The reward at the top are stunning 360* views.

Yes, You can take your puppy… but only if you collect their 💩!!
Where to sleep? Tent?
- Not many accommodations along the Alta Via, so plan to stay in B&Bs or hotels in coastal villages.
- Book in advance, especially during peak seasons, as demand is high.
- If you stay up on the Alta Via there are plenty of places where you can set up a tent, but bear in mind that you need to think about water and food supplies

Best months to hike it?
- The mild climate makes the Alta Via suitable for year-round hiking, but would avoid July and August. (I did it in August and it was way too hot).
- As usual, check weather forecasts for safety, avoiding the trail during heavy rain or strong winds.
What to bring?
- Wear sturdy, comfortable hiking shoes suitable for various terrains. It is not a walk in the park and is more challenging than expected.
- Carry trekking poles for stability.
Trail waymarking
- Marked trail with signage, but it could be improved.
- Especially if you don’t speak Italian, I would recommend having a gpx map with you.
Planning Information
Cinque Terre and sourroundigs areas can get packed and fully booked quite in advance. So make sure you book your stays and plan the whole hike in advance.
Getting there & Away
Few options:
- I recommend starting in Levanto, which is accessible by train from La Spezia or Milan. Trains are the most practical mode of transportation between Cinque Terre villages.
- If you want to start from Porto Venere, then you need to get a bus 11/P from La Spezia
- If you travel by car consider leaving your car in Campiglia, a village midway between Portovenere and Telegrafo and then getting to the beginning of the trail (hitchhiking, hiking, booking a taxi in advance…)
