Who is this itinerary for?
This itinerary is for everyone! Most places are reachable by car or e-bike, and there are several hikes around the area. The hikes are not super well-marked, so I recommend having a GPX trace, especially if you don’t speak Italian. The elevation gain of the ones I did is not bad, but as usual, make sure to be well-prepared for any emergency.
Hiking Monte Cimone

- Monte Cimone
- 11.5km
- 3.5h return
Towering over the region at 2,165 meters (7,103 feet), Monte Cimone is the highest peak in the northern Apennines—and a beloved destination for hikers, skiers, and nature lovers alike. Just a short drive or bike ride from Hotel San Marco, Monte Cimone offers year-round adventure: ski slopes and snowboarding terrain in winter, and panoramic hiking trails and wildflower-covered meadows in summer. From the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking views that stretch across Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, and even as far as the Alps on a clear day. It’s a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience the raw beauty and grandeur of the Italian mountains.
Apennines E-biking

One of the best ways to discover the rugged beauty of the Modenese Apennines is by electric bike—and at Hotel San Marco, you don’t even need to bring your own. The hotel offers on-site e-bike rentals, making it easy and convenient to explore the surrounding mountains, forests, and alpine villages without the strain of steep climbs.
From Sestola, a network of scenic cycling routes unfolds in every direction, suitable for all levels—from leisurely rides through meadows and chestnut groves to more challenging ascents toward Monte Cimone or the Ridgeline trails of the Apennine crest. Along the way, you can stop at panoramic viewpoints, family-run rifugi, and medieval hamlets like Fanano and Montecreto.
Thanks to e-assist technology, even casual riders can enjoy longer, more adventurous outings without exhausting themselves—leaving more energy for an afternoon in the spa or a glass of local red in the hotel’s wine bar. Whether you’re chasing elevation or just fresh mountain air, Hotel San Marco makes e-biking easy, accessible, and unforgettable.
A Culinary Experience to Remember

No visit to Hotel San Marco is complete without dining at Alta Sestolina, the hotel’s renowned in-house restaurant. This elegant eatery offers a refined take on traditional Emilian cuisine, blending local ingredients with creative flair. From hand-made pasta to seasonal specialties, every dish is crafted to delight the senses.
Pair your meal with a selection from the hotel’s well-curated wine cellar. The enoteca , La Via Vineria boasts an impressive list of regional and national wines, carefully selected to complement the flavors of Alta Sestolina’s cuisine. Whether you’re a seasoned sommelier or a casual wine lover, you’ll find something worth savoring.
Relax at the SPA

After a day of hiking, biking, or skiing in the Apennines, there’s no better way to unwind than in the wellness area of Hotel San Marco. Designed with tranquillity in mind, the hotel’s intimate and private SPA is a true retreat for body and mind.
Step into the warm bubble tub and let the mountain stress melt away as jets of water gently massage your muscles. Move on to the Finnish sauna, where dry heat promotes deep relaxation and detoxification, or indulge in the bagno turco—a traditional Turkish bath with aromatic steam that purifies the skin and soothes the senses.
Between sessions, cozy up in a soft robe and sip on a selection of herbal teas, available in the spa’s calming tisaneria corner. It’s the perfect pause for reflection and renewal, surrounded by the scent of alpine herbs and the quiet charm of the Modenese mountains.
Whether you’re visiting for a romantic escape, a solo recharge, or post-adventure recovery, the spa at Hotel San Marco offers a warm embrace and a deep breath of peace in the heart of the Apennines.
Why the Modenese Apennines Deserve More Attention
While Italy’s major tourist hotspots are often crowded and commercial, the Modenese Apennines remain authentic, quiet, and breathtakingly beautiful. Here, you can hike through ancient chestnut groves, cycle along alpine ridges, and enjoy the silence of the mountains—all without the crowds.
Sestola itself is a postcard-perfect alpine town with cobbled streets, a historic castle, and panoramic views of Monte Cimone. In winter, it becomes a small but lively ski resort, while summer brings fresh air, festivals, and outdoor sports.
Whether you’re hiking through its picturesque trails, discovering its historical treasures, or simply soaking in the tranquil beauty, the Modenese Apennines promise an unforgettable experience.
