Is it Legal to Car Camp in Italy?

Car Camping or Van Lifing in Italy

Let me tell you, right now, there isn’t a YES or NO answer! But many maybes!

Each region has its own local rules. So it first depends on which region you are planning to visit!

I added a car camping section to each region’s “Discover Italy like a Local Guide” rules!

Can I sleep in my van or car in Italy?

If you’re wondering, “Can I sleep in my van or car in Italy?“, the good news is that there is no national law prohibiting sleeping in a vehicle. Whether you’re traveling in a camper, van, or car, you can legally sleep overnight as long as you follow local regulations.

However, be aware of local restrictions. Some municipalities and regions may have specific rules against overnight stays in vehicles, especially during nighttime hours. Always check the local ordinances to avoid fines.

Highway Code Article 185 – Rules for Sleeping in a Vehicle

According to Article 185 of the Italian Highway Code, parking a vehicle (including cars and vans) is not considered camping if:

  • The vehicle only rests on its wheels (no levelling blocks).
  • No fluids are emitted other than those from the engine.
  • The vehicle does not occupy more space than its own dimensions.

Violations can lead to fines between €250 and €500.

In summary, as long as you meet these conditions, sleeping in your vehicle is not considered camping, and you are following the law.

Types of Camping Areas in Italy

  • Rest Stops (Punto di sosta): Stop along highways and spend the night for free, but with no available services.
  • Camper Service Areas: Stay for one night, with access to water, sewage disposal, and electricity
  • Equipped Camping Areas (Aree attrezzate): Paid areas with showers, toilets, and electricity, perfect for a comfortable stay.
  • Integrated Areas (Aree integrate): Located near hotels, inns, and restaurants, you can enjoy meals or services while sleeping in your camper.
