Mount Musinè, Torino: A Hike into the Legends and Beauty

mount musiné piedmont turin italy hike summit

Mount Musine'

Monte Musinè, standing proudly as one of the closest mountains to Turin, is a hidden gem just 12 kilometers away from the city. Despite its altitude surpassing 1100 meters, it often remains concealed from the residents of Turin due to the frequent haze covering the plains and the lower valley.

This seemingly barren and inhospitable mountain, located at the entrance of Val Susa, between the municipalities of Caselette, Almese, and Val della Torre, is not only known for its legendary tales of witches, werewolves, rulers, and even UFO sightings but also beckons hikers with its panoramic trails and breathtaking views once the summit is conquered.

Many different tracks are leading you to the top. I did the most panoramic, but longest one.

Who is this hike for?

This hike is for everyone! It is marked, but I recommend having a GPX trace especially if you don’t speak Italian. The elevation gain is fair, but make sure to be well-prepared for any emergency.

The Track

Embarking on the journey from the sports field in Caselette, instead of veering right, one follows the left, navigating through a dirt road that eventually transforms into the Musinè firebreak trail. Approximately 10 minutes along this path leads to the beautiful Pian Dumini plateau.

Following the fire trail, you will see on your left the ruins of a tower. I haven’t discovered why or whose era it was built in. But it doesn’t look very ancient.

If you keep walking on the fire trails in Autumn and Winter, you will most likely encounter a herd of highlands cows. I was lucky to encounter the shepherd and we had a nice chat about the surrounding area.

Till you are on the fire trail, the track is very easy, with almost no elevation gain. Once you take the detour to reach the summit then it gets pretty vertical. You can tell this section is not a popular way to reach the top because some areas of the track are a bit overgrown.

It took me 2.5 hours to reach the top. The track is well-marked with cairns and yellow or white and red signs.

Once you arrive at the summit the cross becomes visible only at the very end. The cross is HUGE and, in my honest opinion, very ugly!

The descent was crusy but can get very slippery.
