Portofino by tent, Liguria, Italy: 2 DAYS ITINERARY

Portofino, Liguria, Italy

The Eremo di Niasca is located in Portofino National Park, and it is the ideal destination for those seeking a nature-oriented and eco-sustainable vacation. With 80 km of marked trails, it is an extraordinary place for hiking and biking enthusiasts. The variety of routes offers itineraries suitable for both well-trained hikers and bikers and those who enjoy relaxing and easy walks.

With proper shoes, you can explore the many trails that traverse and reach wild environments, unspoiled landscapes, and incredible viewpoints. This itinerary will take you through nature, fishing villages, history, and tradition.

This area of Liguria, despite being so touristy on the coast, up in the mountains, has not been well discovered yet, but as you can imagine, it is breathtaking, so I recommend you go and explore around.

Catch you outside,

Elena

Who is this itinerary for?

This itinerary is for everyone! The Eremo is reachable by car and then 10 min walk (uphill), so go there with a backpack and avoid big suitcases. There are several hikes around the area, and you are close to Santa Margherita, Camogli and, of course, Portofino.

All the hikes are marked, but I recommend having a GPX trace, especially if you don’t speak Italian. The elevation gain of the ones I did is not bad, but as usual, make sure to be well-prepared for any emergency.

The Eremo di Sant’Antonio di Niasca

L’Eremo Sant’Antonio di Niasca welcomes you to Portofino. To reach it  is a 10-minute  walk from the main street and the bus stop. It is 600 meters from Paraggi Beach and 2.1 km from Pedale Beach. The eremo offers a garden, with a stunning view overlooking the sea, a restaurant, and a bar for your convenience.

Each room includes a fully equipped private bathroom with a bidet and a hairdryer.

I had the chance to pitch my tent in the garden, but keep in mind it is a very basic campground with no shower.

Day Hike – Portofino to Camogli

Hiking the Scenic Path from Portofino to Camogli: A Mediterranean Adventure

Exploring the beautiful Portofino National l Park offers an unparalleled experience for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. One of the most exciting trails winds through the lush Mediterranean scrub, starting from Portofino and taking you to the picturesque San Fruttuoso before finally reaching Camogli. This adventure promises a blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and a touch of adrenaline. BUT BE CAREFUL, IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE! EXPERIENCED HIKERS ONLY

The trail is a continuous up and down, presenting a moderate challenge right from the start. As you progress, the Mediterranean scrub gradually envelops you with its dense shrubs and prickly branches. This rich vegetation, characteristic of the region, adds to the trail’s rugged charm.

Historical Highlights

Along the way, you’ll encounter remnants of World War II forts, complete with watchtowers that offer breathtaking views of the sea. These historical sites provide a fascinating glimpse into the past, adding a layer of intrigue to your hike.

Conquering the Passo del Bacio

The most challenging part of the route is the Passo del Bacio, where you’ll navigate steep rocks with the help of a chain. This section demands caution and a steady footing, but the thrill of crossing it and the stunning coastal views make it incredibly rewarding.

A Word of Caution

It’s important to note that this trail is not for everyone. If you’re not accustomed to mountain hiking, you might want to consider the simpler lower variant or take a ferry to San Fruttuoso and hike the shorter segment to Portofino. Treks near the sea can be deceptively challenging, and proper preparation is essential.

Essential Gear and Tips

Ensure you’re well-equipped with trekking shoes and all the necessary gear you’d bring for a mountain hike. In the summer months, carry plenty of water and mineral salts, as the trail has many exposed areas and the sun can be intense. Remember, there are no water sources between San Fruttuoso and Portofino, so stock up before you leave San Fruttuoso.

Rest and Restaurants

San Fruttuoso offers a restaurant and a bar, perfect for a relaxing break. If you plan to enjoy the beach, make sure to book in advance, as it gets crowded in summer.

Planning Your Return

Remember that the last ferry from Portofino to San Fruttuoso departs at 4:30 PM. Be sure to check the ferry schedules on websites like Traghetti Portofino and Golfo Paradiso. Alternatively, you can return by train from Santa Margherita Ligure, just a 15-minute ferry ride from Portofino.

Final Thoughts

The trail from Portofino to Camogli is a thrilling adventure that offers stunning views, historical insights, and a true taste of the Mediterranean landscape. With the right preparation and mindset, it can be a memorable and enjoyable experience. So, lace up your trekking shoes, pack your essentials, and get ready to explore one of Italy’s most beautiful coastal trails!
