Few trails pack so much variety into such a short distance.
 From the white saline of Cagliari and the pink wings of flamingos, to rural paths lined with nuraghi and the turquoise sea of Nora — this Camino is a journey through contrasts.
You’ll walk along coastal plains, ancient Roman roads, and narrow countryside lanes where time feels suspended. One moment you’re crossing wetlands filled with birds, the next you’re climbing gentle hills with a view of the refinery — a reminder that nature and modernity coexist here, and in the rest of the world.
But beyond the landscapes, the soul of this Camino lies in its people and traditions. Every May, thousands walk in the Processione di Sant’Efisio, the longest religious procession in the Mediterranean, with ox-drawn trakkas, colorful traditional dresses, and the scent of myrtle in the air.
Technically speaking, it’s around 80 km, usually completed in 4–5 days, mostly on dirt tracks and secondary roads. You can do it year-round, I suggest in May during the procession, but autumn and winter are the best seasons — mild temperatures, quiet villages, and the soft light of Sardinia at its most authentic.

Who is Sant’ Efisio?
Every year, from the 1st to the 4th of May, Sardinia comes alive for one of its most extraordinary journeys — the Processione di Sant’Efisio. It honors a Roman soldier who became a saint after defending his faith and, centuries later, was believed to have saved Cagliari from the plague.
For four days, locals walk nearly 80 km from Cagliari to Nora, retracing his path through coastal plains, small villages, and quiet countryside. It’s one of the longest processions in the Mediterranean — a moving mix of faith, tradition, and community that feels more like a slow pilgrimage than an event.
Even if you’re not religious, joining or witnessing it is unforgettable. You’ll walk beside ox-drawn carts covered in flowers, hear Sardinian songs echoing across the fields, and feel centuries of devotion woven into every step.
If you want to experience Sardinia beyond its beaches — and see a truly authentic pilgrimage — I definitely recommend booking your tickets and accommodation early, as the villages fill up fast during the May procession!

When I first decided to hike the Cammino di San Ni

When I first decided to hike the Cammino di San Nilo in Southern Italy, I honestly had no idea what to expect. 🌿🇮🇹
This hidden trail in Cilento stretches from the beach in Sapri all the way to the cliffs of Palinuro — about 111 km across 8 stages. It’s a mix of wild mountains, Byzantine history, medieval villages, and… let’s be honest… A LOT of amazing food. 🍝✨
But there are a few things I wish I had known before starting.
That’s why I put together this list of 10 tips that will make your Cammino di San Nilo experience so much better:
🌞 Don’t go in summer — the heat and humidity are brutal. Spring or autumn is perfect. 🚆 Logistics are simple — fast trains stop in Sapri, regional trains stop in Palinuro. 🥾 Don’t rush sections 3 & 4 — they’re shorter, but they’re magical. Take your time. 👙 Bring your swimmers — you start and end at the sea, plus rivers and waterfalls on the way. 🍷 Be ready to eat — even after hiking all day, you’ll gain a kilo. The food is too good to resist. 🦟 Pack insect repellent — especially for summer evenings. ⛰️ Hiking poles are a must — steep ascents and descents will test your knees. 📜 Get the pilgrim credential — just like on the Camino, you can collect stamps in each village. 🏡 Stay in the villages — no luxury, but incredible hospitality and homemade food. 🏛️ History everywhere — Byzantine chapels, medieval castles, and timeless traditions.
What I loved most? The balance of nature and community. One moment you’re walking in silence through a forest of ancient oaks, the next you’re eating pasta with locals in a tiny trattoria, and by the end of the trail you dive into the sea at Palinuro. 🌊

Have you ever heard of the Cammino di San Nilo?
Probably not — and that’s what makes it so special.
This multi-day hike runs for 111 km, divided into 6 or 8 legs (depends on your training), starting on the beach in Sapri and ending on the beach in Palinuro in Campania. Along the way, you cross Cilento National Park — the second largest in Italy, exploding with biodiversity, hidden trails, and landscapes that change at every turn.
But the magic lies also in the villages you pass: tiny little towns where the food is simply incredible and the hospitality of locals makes you feel like family.
Every leg is a journey through both nature and culture.
The path follows the footsteps of San Nilo, a 10th-century monk and pilgrim who founded monasteries and became a symbol of simplicity and resilience. Like on the Camino de Santiago, here you can also collect a pilgrim credential to mark your journey.
Another plus? It’s easy to reach by fast train, making it accessible even for a short escape. And unlike many trails, this one is perfect outside the hot summer months — ideal in winter, spring, or autumn, when the air is crisp and the views are crystal clear.
This is not just a hike. It’s an immersion in history, nature, and soul.
